More on Bodhi...
From: Edmonton
Background:
Very mixed!
Family:
Mom: June, Dharma-Son: Ven. Metteyya, brother and sister-in-law: Lorne and Sandra, approx. 900 kids in Nepal who call me mom, 2 hairless cats: Clover and Reesie, and my countless brothers and sisters on the planet.
Religious Affiliation:
Ordained nun in the Theravada tradition of Nepal. Buddhism and meditation teacher with CEBA- Canadian Engaged Buddhism Association in Edmonton. I have also studied and practiced in different Buddhist traditions. I chose to ordain in Theravada because it doesn’t limit me to just one sect of Buddhism and I can continue to study and practice in other traditions. Our Buddhist organization, CEBA, is therefore open to all Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
Educational History:
B.Sc. Biology at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC; Diploma Biological Sciences and Pollution Control Technology at NAIT in Edmonton.
At the U of A since:
April 2011
Why I'm a Chaplain at the U of A:
To be available to students and staff, Buddhist, non-Buddhist, atheist or agnostic when in need of support - spiritual, or otherwise.
Current Focus at the U of A:
Meditation and book studies, counseling, teaching. Meditation classes Monday Nights 7-8:30 pm at Garneau United Church.
Other Passions & Interests:
Besides Buddha and his teachings, meditation, and helping others I am very concerned about animals and the environment. I work at Environment Canada in environmental protection. I also help run 2 free schools for 900 kids in Nepal and we are in the process of building a girls college there too. I built and am running a small girls monastery (nunnery) in Nepal, to provide rural girls (who would be otherwise married) with the opportunity to continue their education. I have done a lot of volunteer work with elephants in Sri Lanka and operate a small organization to fundraise for them. I travel back to Asia for volunteer work, meditation retreats, Buddhist pilgrimage and study quite regularly.
